Case Study and Guest Speaker Meeting (Jan. 21, 2020)

In order to help you better prepare for the SOA Case Challenge, Carolina’s Actuarial Student Organization is having a Case Study Workshop next Tuesday (Jan.21st) at 7pm at Hanes 120, given by a former 2nd place winner and our advisor. For those who have declared interests in this challenge and filled out the spreadsheet, I strongly recommend you to attend. They will give you basic ideas and great advice, also showing you the executive report from the winning year. If you had decided to participate in this Case Challenge, you will not miss this workshop. Plus, if you haven’t been able to find teammates, come to this workshop and ask around!

Followed by two presentations from one FSA and one FCAS. They will give you different perspectives on working in different actuarial industries. If you haven’t figured out which path to choose, you will get a better idea after the presentation. This is going to be an entry level event, so anyone who is only interested in data science/finance related work is welcomed!

More information about the 2020 SOA Case Challenge:

The challenge integrates actuarial science and data science and provides an opportunity to apply actuarial skills to real-world problems through research, analysis, and the development of models.  It is a great way to enhance your resume if you have no work experience.

Two teams of five of our students finished second in international competition in 2019, and third in 2017.  They secured $3,000 and $2,000 grants to UNC from the Society of Actuaries, as well as $500 to each one of the team.
